'Many people will know the grounds of Woodstock Estate as a place to walk or go for a picnic. The shell of the former ‘Woodstock House’ still looms large as a monument to the revolutionary era. The house was destroyed during the very first week of the Irish Civil War, in July 1922 by the anti-Treaty IRA in order to stop the Free State forces regarrisoning it. We often concentrate on its grim demise, but Woodstock House had a long life, of over 170 years. It has many stories to tell, some of which are told in this podcast. From its construction by the Fownes family (designed by Francis Bindon); to its golden era during the period of the Tighe matriarch, Lady Louisa; to its occupation by the Auxiliaries during the War of Independence.
